This poem is me. I was trying to express my gratitude to my adoptive parents and also express my views on mixed race adoption, as I have watched my mother be hurt by things I and others have said, often in ignorance or negativity.

'
Mixed race nigger' - The poem goes through all the emotions I felt as a child and a young teenager where I was completely at the mercy of 'society', as were my adoptive parents who experienced racial abuse for adopting black children.

We fought many battles, my parents and myself, but that was and is because we are different characters. If I had been left with my Irish birth mother I would have still had the problems with identity, because of England's whitewash mentality in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

'Malcolm went to Mecca' - This line to me sums it all up. I think Malcolm X's teachings about people, spirituality and God, and his insight from his visit to Mecca should be a doctrine to everyone. My adoptive parents chose to adopt me and told me I was wanted unconditionally. They told me truth knows no colour, you can be who you want to be.
